You can find many genres in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. The genres that stuck out to me and what got me hooked on them was the fantasy in the series. This whole new world about wizards and witches to learn about and it captivated me from the start. Reading the first couple of books or seeing the movies had this new world and what made it so special I think was learning about it along with Harry. You don't get thrown into the world like most authors do when describing a fantasy series. They explain things first hand and walk through it from the start to the finish. In Harry Potter you're learning about it with him and so this fantasy world that just develops around him is just as new to him and it revealing itself in the same way to Harry and the reader. Like the both are experiencing everything with this new world together. Harry learns about the school the same time as the reader and learns many things the same time in the first book such as the true reason for his parents' death and what quidditch is.
Another genre of Harry Potter that lured me in for the books and movies was the mystery aspect. This anticipation in finding out the source of the big bad in the book. In the first book odd things happen to Harry that cause his scar to hurt or things like during a quidditch match that causes his broom to go haywire and try to buck him off the whole game. There was a robbing at Gringotts bank that happened to be the vault that Hagrid had emptied early in the day. Who tried to steal what was in it? What was in the vault to start with? These mysteries keep the reader at the edge of their seat trying to figure out what would happen next. This followed in the second book as well. There were students being petrified and no one knew who or what was doing it. Could Harry really be an heir to Salazar Slytherin because he can speak parseltoungue and the sorting hat said he would do well in Slytherin? These books had mystery all through them, multiple mysteries and some weren't answered to the end of the books.
